Rabbit Tracks

It was Friday and a warm, sunny day.
That brought throngs of loads of crowds,
and ZERO parking at Loveland Basin.
Frustrated, I turned tail and had begun
my retreat. But wait... there was Loveland Valley,
Loveland Basin's much mellower lil' sister just down
the road on the way out...why not check it out.
I pulled into a nearly vacant lot right next to a lift!
Were it not for local high school ski racing going on,
it would have been empty here. I quickly
found a fellow member of Steeler Nation in the lot.
Rabbit, a bartender/DJ from Idaho Springs
via McKeesport Pa., shared a bit of Super Bowl
banter with me as well as some advice on what
was good to ski today.
Rabbit is 61 and began skiing at 37 years of age,
proving it's never too late to start!
That's Loveland Pass out in the distance,
all skiable backcountry access (ski at your own risk).
Todays race course in the foreground,
up the road, L Basin lot was FULL.
fingernail in the sky.

Today I was my twentieth of the season,
that was my initial target for the season.
I'm hoping for to be in the 40-50 range now,
 good health and fortune permitting.

Squeaky Snow

When it's really cold outside,
the snow sounds squeaky, like
walking on a horizontal chalkboard
with Gene Simmons dragon boots on.
That's how it sounded today at LL,
because it was quite cold, and windy,
but there was fresh snow, that's all
that really matters.
Nice coat lady.
Walk of shame.
Frosty around the vents.
...And I love product loyalty!

Always remember to ski in front of the camera guy.

I did'nt have the camera out

too much today, too cold.

Copper on Thurs. maybe...I hope.

Inauguration Day/ A New Era...

A new era indeed as I vow to stop
skiing like a French hooker bird
(knees apart and arms flapping).
Oh, and the nation has a new leader too,
and not a day too soon, I wonder if he skis?
Barrack Snobama?
That's me sillouetted against a deep blue sky(photo by Gene)
Clear, warm, and beautiful, a good day to be alive.
mountains.
Where there's smoke...
Excellent visiblity on The Ridge.

I'm having some difficulties
uploading video, I'll try to get
that worked out. Oh by the way,
Pittsburgh Steelers, AFC Champs!!!

Missed Connections

Today was $10 Hooky Day
at Loveland and many of our
friends made it over to ski...
but in the morning, that ain't
how we roll here at the A.S.C.
Despite our best efforts, we never
hooked up with our earlybird
counterparts, I heard they had a
great time regardless. I'll somehow
have to get over my belief that
cellphones have no place on the
mountain, as that is viewed as
an atiquated notion, and bring
it along next time, and maybe
make our connection,... nah.
Weather was overcast, not great for
pics but the clouds burned away for
a bit, and we attempted some
video, but my battery died, along
with any pics or vids for today,
except for the ones below.

Monarchy

We spent over 5 hours driving
to experience a ski area that was new
to Myself, Mean Gene, and Dad of M.G.
Monarch Ski Area is nestled atop Monarch Pass
on CO Hwy 50 somewhere west of Salida
in the center of the state. Our Loveland
ski passes entitle us to 3 free days here,
I'm pretty sure we'll make the drive again
to use the other 2. This place was great!
Yet another old school area with sparse
crowds, cool staff,  and awesome terrain.
Today we had some fresh snow,
and a gorgeous bluebird day!
A panorama of  "Shagnasty"
M.G. gets NUTS!
What goes up...
Big ups to members of Special Forces training here today.
Lots
Of
Fresh
Turns
A Crash...
and another
Crash!
and Burn!
aka Wulf
Gene's Pop rippin' it up.
Tremendous View.
M.G. rises up from the pow.
And I was there too, hooray ME!

Hooky Day tommorrow,
We may have quite a group forming
for this one, please be sure to look in
to see the action later.

Chocolate Covered Bacon

Today the Afternoon Ski Club
joined forces with the 70+ Ski Club,
as Mean Gene's Pop joined us in
ripping up 8"+ of fresh powdery goodness.
A tip of the cap to the senior Mr. Tewksbury,
I hope I'm still tearing it up when I'm
in my 70's...in 40 years. A late lunch
in Empire took us to the Lewis Sweet Shop.
The pulled pork tacos were delicious.
They also feature homemade treats
like this culinary anomaly below...

That's right, chocolate covered bacon, yum.
clockin' in at the usual time.
The Wild Bunch.
M.G.'s Pop swallowed up by the powder.

A block of clips featuring Myself, Mean Gene, and M.G.'s Dad.

Barring any unforseen B.S.,
a roadtrip to Monarch Ski Area
is the plan for Wednesday, and
Hooky Day pt. 2 at Loveland on
Thursday, come back for more
later this week.

On Top of Old Windy.

Holy Crap! It was cold today.
Real good to be back on the hill
this afternoon after a brief hiatus
from the holiday hordes. They certain
left their remains though, lots of hardpack
and skiied off ice, boo hoo, right.
It was'nt all bad, I discovered a few
pockets of powder blown onto certain
parts of the mountain, and tried out
a few new runs, all  capped off
with some steep ass bowl skiing.

Darth Ninja.
Wind buffetted.
Midway station closed due to
lack of snow?...
Yep, looks that way.
Final destination..."The Ridge"
(notice nobody in front of me)
From the top (Continental Divide), facing east
I nearly lost some fingers up here...sooo cold.
Keystone(foreground) and Breckenridge(back) to the west.
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains.

The new year should bring us
some new adventures in new places
please come back and see.
